SECTIONS - IMPASSES   My first encounter with geometry was through arabesque, an abundant and varied abstract geometric play with an intense sense of mysticism, and through the art deco ambience of cosmopolitan Cairo, the city where I spent my first twenty-one years. At the same time, I had been studying geometry through Egyptian and Ancient Greek art; these two civilizations have a very characteristic geometric structure and thought. Much later I was introduced to and came to appreciate the geometric research of the 20th century which has since lent a most positive contribution to my own research.
It was during this purely geometric period that I dismissed all traces of writing and studied solid colour. The surfaces were smooth but the works were in relief. I made my first coloured sculptures during that period.

I changed materials according to the needs of my work. I worked on my projects by dividing them into an 8x8 or 16xl6 grid and tried to utilize the 3/8 or 6/16 of this surface; these fractions are closely linked to the golden section. The result was a composition with many overlying sequential surfaces.
This work was based on my research into sections, diagonals circles squares and triangles, I cut and removed certain levels simultaneously, creating optical illusions which produced a refraction effect.
