EX-EROTICIS
1894-1985

4e/11. Josef Hodek (CZ, 1888-1973) K. K., 2X1, 150 x 130, c.1925.

Hodek’s activity in the field of ex-libris was important, and he made several hundred pieces. This ex-eroticis was made with two wood blocks, one for the central image and one for the frame. It is printed on rice paper and is scarce.
4e/12. Walter Helfenbein (D, 1893-1984) DR JOSEF LENZE, C4, 127 x 100, 1922.

Much of Helfenbein’s work is full of insinuated eroticism, and his mastery at drawing oriental-style scenes and Art Nouveau flavoured interiors is incomparable. This image seems innocent enough at first glance. Then one perceives the quasi-anonymous faces, and the banknotes changing hands.

4e/13. Hermann Bauer (D, 1892-?) HANNS HEEREN, C4, 154 x 112, 1921.

Yet another German artist of the ‘Golden Age’ whose mastery at expressionist drypoint is outstanding. Bauer left a substantial ex-libris opus of which about half a dozen are ex-eroticis.
4e/14. Karl Ritter (D, 1888-1977) K. R. (ipse?), C2 + C4, 110 x 84, 1923.

Ritter seems to have made two ex-libris for erotic books, of which one without an owner’s name and this one which appears to have been made for himself. These two are amongst ten ex-libris by this artist which until recently had not been tracked down and of which no print had been seen. They are of the utmost rarity.

4e/15. Victor Fleissig (CZ, 1892-?) M. BIRNHOLZ, C3, 137 x 93, 1930.

The Czech artist Fleissig made a large number of ex-libris, and some of them such as this ex-eroticis on the subject of the alchemist, are worth recording.
4e/16. Willy Jaeckel (D, 1888-1944) CURT MüLLER, P1/col., 108 x 63, c.1930.

The Berlin artist Jaeckel’s bookplate for Müller is perhaps the most often illustrated ex-eroticis, because of its subject but also because it is an interesting period piece, revealing once again the extent of Beardsley’s influence on early 20th century art and illustration. Original prints of this plate are very uncommon; this one was earlier in the Hintze collection.

4e/17. ? (A) ING. FRANZ HAINZL, P4, 118 x 89, c.1920

The artist who made this ex-libris is not identified, and its owner was not particularly distinguished – but it is one of the most amusing ex-eroticis to be found!
4e/18. Jean Morisot (F, 1899-1967) IPSE, P1, 75 x 85, c.1930.

Morisot, who was a doctor with an immense natural talent for drawing, used the pseudonym Sauteval and signed a number of erotic plates in this name. His work is characterised by a great sense of fun, and his work is much appreciated by collectors.

4e/19. Max Kislinger (A, 1895-1983) RESI HUBERMANN, X1, 100 x 59, 1928. Viz. Blum p. 86, ill.

The same humour pervades the ex-eroticis of Max Kislinger, the prolific Austrian woodcut artist and illustrator.
4e/20. Michl Fingesten (A/D, 1884-1943) GIANNI MANTERO, C4, 145 x 116, c.1935.

Fingesten (see 4d/20) made a number of ex-eroticis, several of which for the collector Mantero. The forceful directness of this image carries a clear message that man’s mind is the key factor in eroticism.
