4c/11. Aldo Patocchi (CH, 1907-1986) GIANNI MANTERO,
X2 + T, 141 x 71, c.1940. GM 8022.
Mantero was one of the most active collectors in the midcentury and had an immense number of plates to his name, many of which underlined his profession of engineer. Patocchi was a celebrated Italian-Swiss woodcut and wood engraving artist. |
4c/12. Franz Taussig (A, 1906-?) HANNS MIEDL, C3,
72 x 49, c. 1930.
A fine plate for an Austrian architect, by a descendant of the Cossmann school of delicate engraving. |

4c/13. Georg Gelbke (D, 1882-1947) FRANZ KLEIN, C4,
115 x 88, c.1920.
Gelbke was one of the major figures of the Dresden school, and this delicate drypoint engraving for the architect Franz Klein is witness to the quality of his work. |
4c/14. Johann Wunderlich (D) CARL LUDWIG WUNDERLICH,
L, 123 x 99, c.1910.
A little-known artist, but a very amusing plate for a lawyer, in typical Art Nouveau frame style. |

4c/17. Arnold Oechslin (CH, 1885-1960) DR. F. LIMACHER,
C3, 145 x 107, c.1920.
An amusing ex-libris by the Swiss painter and etcher Oechslin for a dentist. One hopes he used more gentle methods of extraction than the one shown here. |
4c/18. Emil Kotrba (CZ, 1912-1983) OTTMAR PREMSTALLER,
X2, 77 x 63, 1958.
Kotrba was a prolific wood engraver who made a large number of ex-libris, not always of very high quality; one of his most pleasing plates is this ex-libris for Mr. Premstaller, who is a veterinary surgeon. |

4c/19. Mathilde Ade (D, 1877-1953) DR. RICHARD VON DER
HEIDE, P7, 88 x 71, c.1910.
The Hungarian-born artist Mathilde Ade made over 200 bookplates in Munich, where she lived and worked as an illustrator and designer. Many of her ex-libris are humorous, as is this one for a veterinary surgeon. |
4c/20. Robert Langbein (D, 1864-?) DR. ANTON WERNER,
C3, 118 x 76, 1917.
Langbein made a substantial number of ex-libris, but rarely of such high quality as this sensitive engraving for a doctor, which seems to express all the tension of diagnosis. |
