Digital Technology and the Information Revolution
POSSIBILITIES for Further Development of Graphic Arts by Dragana Kovacic 5/ 6 Example II. Author: Cedomir Vasic, Final Solution, 1999. and Evening in the Mountain, The Road to Oz and Infinity, 1999
This work addresses the role of replication in social.
Cultural and political surroundings. Vasic chose pictures that have
specific iconography and symbolic
importance in Serbia with clear intentions: The
Herzegovina Fugitives by Uros Predic, The
Serb Migration by Paja Jovanovic, and The
Kosovo Maiden by Uros Predic. These
works by the most renowned Serbian
academic realist painters from the end of the
19th century represent a part of the
national collective memory, and have become
topical due to the recent events in the Balkans.
The problem of reproducing national myths
and symbols in political propaganda is
underlined, as well as the power possessed
by the reproductions in communicating
with the masses, which finally leads to the
creation of a total psychosis in crisis times
of crisis. Offering each visitor the
opportunity to print his own copy suggests the fact
that, although passive, he/she is participant
in the entire propaganda game, in the
inflation of icons and the decrease of national
values. In addition, Vasic erases the central
event through digital intervention,
annulling the plot, scenes and entire
dramaturgy. An idealised landscape is created
from the historic scene. However, this is not
only a change of genre. The existing is
deprived of its meaning, collective memory
is erased, while pointing out the drastic
consequence, of wrongly employed myths.
Another, further reading could also indicate
the global phenomenon of bending and
retouching information disseminated
through the mass media, which is proven
daily to be a mighty means of political
communication and of creating a public
conscience.
