Portrait de Maria Callas
A Portrait of Maria Callas, 1969
Matériaux divers/Various materials, 349 x 323 mm
While preparing the film "Medea" (which features Maria Callas) on the isle of Saphon as well as at his friend's place (Giuseppe Zigaina), Pasolini made a whole series of portrait-sketches of the Diva. The director-artist attached a lot of importance to the particular choice of materials--which were, among others, dried flower-petals, wine and vinegar. By using them he developped a highly personal symbolism of the moment--the drawings were supposed to slowly fade, very much like the memory of the moment when they had been created.
