Biographie, par Gérard Durozoi Peintre français né à Moscou. Quittant la Russie en 1917, il arrive à Paris six ans plus tard. Il se fonne a l'académie de la Grande Chaumière, puis à Londres avant de côtoyer Delaunay et Kandinsky. Réalisant ses premiers travaux non-figuratifs en 1938, c'est après la guerre qu'il éla- bore progressivement son domaine : il définit, par des recouvrements de couleur, des formes irrégulières, aux imbrications à la fois nettes et vibrantes, de telle façon que la toile, d'une auto- nomie complète, n'obéit qu'a une nécessité strictement plastique. Il est rapidement reconnu comme un des peintres majeurs de l'abstraction telle que la pratique l'École de Paris, parce qu'il a su en définir une version singulière et unique- aussi éloignée de la stricte géométrie, qu'il juge trop froide, que de l'improvisation gestuelle.
