BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Christos Caras was born in Trikala, Thessaly, on
December 9, 1930. He began his higher education at
the Panteion School of Political Sciences (1948 - 1950)
but in 1951 he enrolled in the Athens School of Fine
Arts and received his diploma in 1955. From 1957 -
1960 he studied fresco painting at the Ecole des
Beaux - Arts in Paris with a grant from the Greek State
Subsidy Society. He stayed in Paris till 1963 during
which time he travelled to Belgium, Holland, Spain,
Italy and England.
Subsequently he frequently travelled to Paris, Venice, Basel, Kassel, Brussels arid Berlin attending the large international exhibitions. In 1973 he went to New York with a grant provided by the Ford Foundation. He worked there for two years and took trips to Washington, Boston, Florida and Canada. In Greece he has actively participated in the endeavor to promote modern art through many individual and group exhibitions, media appearances and interviews in newspapers and magazines. Along with other artists he founded the group "Tomi" (1963) and "Syndesmos Kallitechnon" (1976). He also took part in the organization of the First Conference of Greek Artists (1963) and in the Symposium. The Establishment of a Museum of Modern Art in Greece (1977) as well as the Symposium of Modern Art and Tradition (1981). His work has been extensively studied by Efi Ferendinou (1975) in the monograph "Caras, Painting from 1960 to 1975" and Emmanuel Mavrommatis (1972) in his monograph "Morphoplastic Variations in the Painting of Christos Caras 1959 - 1963, 1976 - 1982" and Dora Iliopoulou-Rogan in the monograph "The development and maturation of a figurative polyphonism" (1987). Greek and foreign art critics have also written a large number of articles in newspapers and magazines. The painter lives and works in Greece. |
