Bienal de São Paolo
arteba Sept 25 - Dec 19, 2004
São Paolo
The Fundação Bienal de São Paulo will be opening its 26th Biennial on September 25, 2004. With the theme of Território Livre [in English, "Image Smugglers in a Free Territory], the exhibition will be held in 25,000 square meters of exhibition space on the three floors of the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion, home of the Fundação Bienal, portão 3, Parque do Ibirapuera, São Paulo, Brazil.
This edition of the biennial which is considered to be one of the three most important events of its kind in the world features 140 artists from 60 different countries. The chief curator is Alfons Hug, who was in charge of the previous edition, in 2002.
The theme proposed derives from the idea of the no-man's land, not only geographically, politically and socially speaking, but mainly as an aesthetic fie
ld, where art defies the boundaries of reality. The 26th Bienal de São Paulo is divided into 3 main segments: "National Representations", Special Project Rooms and "Invited Artists".
The "National Representations" segment presents the works of artists from 55 countries (one artist per country). The Bienal has encouraged the participation of a large number of African and Asian countries, which usually get little exposure in contemporary art shows. This year's edition also provides a special exhibition on African Photography, with a selection of 8 artists.

PRAGUEBIENNALE
PRAGUEBIENNALE May 24 – Sept 14, 2007
Prague
In the labyrinth of Central Europe, collective memory and the boundaries of painting meet in Prague for the third year running. Now in its third year, PRAGUEBIENNALE re-launches itself once more. Through a vast display of both recent and past works (from painting and photography to performance and installation art) this year's edition aims to explore and pinpoint the most significant aspects of Central European art. The show displays works by artists young and old, new and affirmed, as well as covering the very movements that shaped the sixties and seventies. Special exhibitions have been dedicated to Czech minimalism and Slovak actionism, which, hitherto, have not been documented on an international level. Following upon the success new artists have achieved after participating in 'Expanded Painting' (PRAGUEBIENNALE veritably 'baptised' or, so to speak, 'consecrated' Andro Wekua, Matthias Weischer, Dana Schutz, Tal R, Victor Man and Wilhelm Sasnal), Expanded Painting 2, will present twenty emerging European artists. There will be a special focus on the 'School of Cluj' in Romania, which, after Leipzig and Dresden, is proving to be a veritable goldmine of contemporary painters. Moreover, the fair pays homage to three seminal artists: Above all, however, the true stars of PRAGUEBIENNALE3 are indeed the very cultures and minor stories of Central Europe.

Biennale de Paris May 15 - June 15, 2006
Paris

A.M.A.C. Oct 7 - Nov 19, 2006

The 3rd Biennale of Ceramics in Contemporary Art developed as a network, a new form of intra/inter territorial aggregation, aimed at developing the social and cultural assets of the Ceramic District in the Province of Savona (Ligurian Riviera, Italy).
During its 3rd edition, the Biennale focused on fostering the interaction and co-existence of multiple and unique interests within a geographic area with deeply-rooted ceramic traditions (Albisola, Savona, Vado Ligure), involving internationally-renowned designers and artists, museum curators, critics, art and design historians, ceramic laboratories and hi-tech companies, professional training centres, universities and fine arts academies in a single field of action.
The 3rd Biennale of Ceramics in Contemporary Art has promoted the encounter between local material ethos, the creative concepts of designers, the free expression of artists and the culture of hi-tech companies to foster an “undisciplined” hybridization of ceramic, design and contemporary art.

Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial   Triennial Festival
nicaf July 23 - Sept 10, 2006
Echigo-Tsumari
Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial is a grand festival of nature, art and humans which takes place every three years in the satoyama of Echgio-Tsumari's six municipalities.
Echigo-Tsumari has been involved with land through agriculture over 1500 years. The landscape and life which has been formed in such a manner is called "satoyama". However, amid the age of efficiency, agriculture has been cut down and vast land has been abandoned, and the region has been depopulated in the course of modernization and has lost its confidence. Now, facing environmental aggravation and standing at the critical point of civilization, we trend to directing our attention to satoyama and recognizing the importance of regaining pride in land and life through involvement with others. This was the starting point of "Riso (meaning "create an ideal country") Plan", which includes Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial. Based on this plan, the six municipalities of the wide region launched "Echigo-Tsumari Art Necklace Project" with the aim of revitalizing the entire region through making good use of their features, and started preparations for the Triennial in partnership with Niigata Prefecture ten years ago. And the first Triennial was held in 2000. It is an endeavor to introduce art and vegetations into public enterprises for roads, parks and cottages, and to expose every three years the result of the project process with local traditional festivals. This attempts to regenerate the region based on the landscape and life of satoyama where people have lived in the blessing of nature and been committed to earth through agriculture since 5,000 years ago.
Please come to Tsumari in summer. Walk and feel there.

Gwangju Biennale
GWANGJU BIENNALE Sept 9 - Nov 11, 2006
Gwangju
The Gwangju Biennale, is a cultural forum that will experiment with established cultural actions, those that are centered around the specialist and cultural power, and transform them into a new concept: the spectator's direct participation in cultural creation.
The Biennale's proposed discussion on culture implies a reordering of essential values and, specifically, a redefining of the norms of those aesthetic decisions that, until now, have been determined by the powerful fiefdom of the elite. It also implies an experience of the various mechanisms that form the stage where individuals and groups distinct from one another express their expectations by transcending the established system of power that recognizes and produces art.

The Craft Museum in Krosno /Poland/ invites linen cloth artists from Poland and abroad, students of the 4th and 5th year as well as the last year's art graduates of Polish universities to take part in the 5th International Artistic Linen Cloth Biennial 'Z krosna do Krosna' and the premiere competition 'Z krosna do Krosna' - DEBUTS 2008.
'Z krosna do Krosna' Biennial has been organised since 2000. It has met an enthusiastic reception not only from the artists but also from art critics. It is fact that the Biennial has been noticed by the artistic circles concerned with linen cloth and, what is very important, treated as a competition of considerable importance. Participation of artists from many countries of the world /Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Island, Israel, Japan, Canada, Latvia, Germany, Poland, Russia, Scotland, Switzerland, Slovakia, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine, USA, Hungary, and Italy/ shows great prestige of this event. It is worth mentioning that Krosno Biennial is the only event of this kind held in the Podkarpacie region, and one of few such events in Poland promoting contemporary art that originates from weaving.
With the 5th edition of the Biennial we would like to welcome young artists that work in the field of linen cloth. 'Z krosna do Krosna' - DEBUTS 2008 competition is aimed at opening up opportunity for making their professional exhibit debut, which would be accompanied by the promotion of young artists and the youngest linen art.
The 5th International Artistic Linen Cloth Biennial 'Z krosna do Krosna' together with the accompanying competition for young artists 'Z krosna do Krosna'- DEBUTS 2008 will be held under the honorary patronage of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage Bogdan Zdrojewski. They also won the support of the Marshal of Podkarpackie Voivodeship and the President of Krosno. The event is held under the scientific patronage of Prof. Irena Huml of the Institute of Art Polish Academy of Science, and the media patronage of the Polish Web Portal of the Managers of Culture: Zarzadzaniekultura.pl and a web portal Kulturaonline.pl

Moscow Biennial

Moscow City Hall
One of the most obvious consequences of political and economical stabilisation in Russia is the growing interest of the Russian society in contemporary culture, and more precisely in contemporary art. As a result a totally new Russian art infrastructure has emerged through art fairs, commercial galleries, non-profit exhibition spaces, festivals and conferences. A new Russian public, as well as the new Russian media, have become especially sensitive to everything that is new and current in contemporary culture.
The Russian art world is developing fast and there is a certain opinion, conviction, vision and understanding that the country needs to organise a major international art event, which would be able to introduce current and relevant art movements to a Russian audience by presenting the most interesting examples of contemporary art. It is the right time in Moscow to create a major international art event, the first of this kind for our country. Visual art is the only art form which does not have a major international forum in our national capital. The Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art would build on the success of other events like the famous Tchaikovsky Musical Festival, Moscow International Film Festival and «The Golden Mask» Theater Festival.

Sharjah International Art Biennial April 4 - June 4, 2007
Sharjah
Art Museum
The Sharjah Biennial 8 (SB8) will present various attempts in visual arts and film that address the growing social, political and environmental challenges the world is facing due to excessive urban development, pollution, political ambitions, and the thoughtless misuse, abuse and exhaustion of natural resources.
SB8 will focus on the renewed role of art in addressing a wide range of issues that directly and radically affect, and in an alarming magnitude the human existence on this earth (man's relation to earth and earth's relation to man). The biennial will not only stand for these issues as a venue and a platform for presentations, exhibits and discussions, but will take an active role in commissioning artists to produce new work corresponding to the topic at hand and will also partner with institutions to stimulate wider involvement with the issues brought up particularly amongst educational institutions.

Whitney Biennial

Biennial
Mars 3 - May 28, 2006
945 Madison Avenue
at 75th Street
New York, NY 10021
In the current plethora of biennial and triennial exhibitions, art fairs, and large group shows across the United States and the rest of the world, how can the Whitney Biennial remain relevant? This was one of our first questions as curators of the 2006 Biennial exhibition. The exhibition remains a closely watched barometer of the changing tides of contemporary American art. Yet the current intense pace of the commercial and not-for-profit art world has brought so much art into view at such speed that by the time it reaches the walls of the Whitney in a Biennial exhibition, there is very little that has not already been seen, digested, and critiqued.

The 2006 Whitney Biennial will examine contemporary artmaking in America at a moment of profound global change. The exhibition, titled Day for Night after Francois Truffaut's 1973 film, conjures a mood of dark intensity, shifting between beauty and degradation, doubt and conformity, the seductive and the strange.

The Sculpture Biennale Competition will result
in a 3 day showcase and 60 day exhibit on the
10-acre site of a new

South Florida.
The Palm Beach International Sculpture Biennale is to be one of the leading outdoor sculpture competitions in the United States. As we launch this event, it is our vision to create a new and innovative venue for emerging sculptors as well as to feature distinguished artists in this field.

By bringing together emerging and established artists through this showcase, exhibit and series of roundtable discussions, we hope to assist in launching new careers, expanding audiences, and engaging collectors and galleries.

Sculptors worldwide compete for prestigious awards and the opportunity to have their work reviewed by internationally renowned jurors, artists, collectors, galleries, curators, and press.

Intensity, experimentation, and visceral presence are the hallmarks of the thirteen significant one-person installations that constitute SITE Santa Fe’s Sixth International Biennial. Curator Klaus Ottmann’s exhibition, entitled Still Points of the Turning World both concentrates and amplifies these singular works, empowering them to speak for themselves without the common filter of a prescriptive curatorial theme. As Ottmann explains, “I want this Biennial to be about the artists, not about the curator.” The exhibition’s manifest commitment to direct experience is designed to elicit a unique personal response from each viewer

Santa Fe Biennial
The glamorous international art fair circuit is where the world's collectors and purveyors of fine contemporary art come to meet and do business. A rising star in this constellation of sophisticated events is ART Santa Fe, an international art fair presented July 2007 at Santa Fe’s El Museo de Cultural.
ART Santa Fe is known as a "boutique" fair. Big enough to be interesting, small enough to be intimate and digestible, the fair offers visitors a highly selective overview of the contemporary art market. Visitors to ART Santa Fe have found it to be a gem among art fairs.
The 2007 lineup of exhibitors included an array of domestic and international galleries, exhibiting works that ranged from edgy to established. Cutting edge media groups returned with a fresh matrix of interactive installations.
